Climbing Competition 2015 and Upcoming Trips

I competed in the UNL climbing competition this past weekend and had a great time. I’m not sure what place I got- I’m hoping in the top 10 but I would be okay with top 15. Last year I got 7th overall but there were a few guys who competed this year that didn’t last year. Overall, I graded myself about an 80%, mainly due to not completing a boulder problem that I fell 3x at the top.

There weren’t really any great pictures, but here are a few below:

A friend of mine doing a harder stem route. I did this route and eventually got it. Pretty fun all around with a tough middle crux where you had to get your foot very high up.

Another friend of mine who is doing a grey boulder problem that I got as well. I was really frustrated because I couldn’t get that orange boulder problem that you can see in the same picture (I fell at the top 3x in a row). The boulder problem was comprised of several big volume/slopers and I just didn’t have the bouldering endurance.

Girlfriend doing a boulder problem. I didn’t try this and it was allegedly really tough.

All in all, I was happy with the competition. I do think that I’m stronger than I was last year and will hopefully keep improving. My future goal for climbing (in terms of improvement) is to increase my skill by half a grade each year. So if I can do 5.12a this year, I want to get to 5.12c or so by next year. I can project 12s right now but definitely not flash them. I have several other future goals for climbing when I go to Colorado. I eventually would like to learn how to do traditional climbing, I would like to learn to boulder better, and I would like to eventually do some multi-pitch stuff as well.

I’ll be going on some trips this month and the next 3 weeks are going to be very busy. I’m really excited to go to Colorado this weekend and I’ll be going to Kentucky next weekend. I’ll be doing a short New York trip after that and will be playing poker throughout April. I’ll be sure to update this blog with some pictures/etc soon.
