some post game thoughts on UF

Sorry for the lack of updates, been super busy lately trying to get school out of the way. I’ve got like…2 weeks left and the end is very near.
I’ve been debating writing a TR for the UF game but I was super damn bitter last night. From here on out I’ll probably write TRs for the games that I go to and my overall experience. So we’ll start now-
This SEC championship was probably one of (if not the most) hyped conference championship ever (though, conference championships have only been going since like…1992 or something). This game had gigantic implications seen in the Heisman race, national title, national perception, etc. And everyone knew the story- it was big bad Nick Saban vs. the emotionless terminator Urban Meyer.
I won’t write a ton of the background stuff. Basically, #1 vs. #2, both teams undefeated (12-0), a rematch from 2008’s SEC championship game (where UF made an exciting fourth quarter come back, sealing the SEC and later the national title).
Anyways, this game was huge. I won’t really go into the different strategies each team hoped to employ either- that would have been nice for a pre-game analysis thing, but since the game is done (and the results known), there doesn’t seem to be much point. But for hard core college football fans, this game was (supposed) to have it all (in regards to matchups, Xs and Os, etc).
Atlanta is a pretty cool city, and a great venue for the SEC championship. I arrived there around 8:30 on Friday, picked up by a friend of mine. We ate at a nearby sushi joint called MF Sushi, which was pretty solid. The quality of seafood in Nebraska isn’t the greatest (as one might imagine) and it was nice to eat some (better) quality seafood.
We met my friend’s friends the next day, wandering around Atlanta before the game. I finally got to eat some Chikfila, a place a fucking love and adore…we don’t have one in Nebraska and I always go apeshit whenever I get the chance to eat it. I contemplated getting a 64 count tray by myself but decided against it…plus, the group was already disgusted that I bought 24 nuggets and extras.
The Georgia Dome is pretty badass…one thing that sucked about this trip was the weather- it was constantly like 30-40 degrees, maybe a bit warmer. While this is relatively ‘warm’ by Nebraska standards these days, it was still a bit chilly, and I was bitter that I couldn’t enjoy some warmer weather.
The game itself? Well, it was like watching a long drawn out prison rape scene. The first half actually gave me some hope, as UF was only down 6 points while executing poorly. Some of those offensive plays had a chance to really change the game (Hernandez drop at the goal line, demps drop in the flat with room to run, etc). But as time wore on, it was pretty clear that our defense was getting shredded, something I thought impossible prior to this game.
I have a lot of mixed thoughts on this season. The loss yesterday was so hurtful…not because I didn’t think we were invincible, but just with all the execution issues. It’s humbling to get totally raped like we did, and I’m fortunate in that regard- UF (typically) wins a lot, and the pain I’m feeling is something that many fans feel several times a year.
Is this season a success? I dunno. With the expectations preseason, I really wanted a championship (as I’m sure others did as well). This probably makes me sound like a really spoiled fan, and it’s probably not far from the truth- UF has won a lot the past few years, and the expectations are perhaps exceedingly high. But when you return the entire 2-deep defense from a year ago along with many key contributors on offense, you expect to carry the same momentum as last year.
But there were obviously a lot of problems this year from the start. We couldn’t maintain that offensive fire power. There are many reasons for this reality (Harvin, new offensive coordinator, etc)…but to think that the defense, a defense that looked very stout all year long would falter like that? I was in shock.
I’m happy for this team. UF has created a standard of excellence that the school might not see again for a long time. It’s hard to win a national title in college football, and it’s even harder to go undefeated. I hope that UF clears whoever they play in the bowl game…maybe Iowa or TCU or BSU. Not really sure what to make of those teams, I’m sure I’ll have a lot of time in the near future to do some write-ups on our projected opponent (which we’ll find out today in the BCS selection show).
Being a true sports fan, it’s hard. The highs and lows are unlike anything I’ve really experienced, maybe comparable to poker at times…but even then, it’s hard to relate. I was so pumped when David Nelson scored on that 2nd half Touchdown, and the emotion…I can’t describe it. I was also crushed when I finally accepted that Alabama couldn’t be stopped, and the slaughter began.
Some other thoughts on losing and winning football games- I’ve asked this question to a lot of my friends and I get varying answers. As a very dedicated sports fan (in whatever sport you may choose), would you rather have your team totally destroy the other team, or to win in a nail biter?
It’s an interesting question because even though blowouts are very nice (and good for the heart/stress level), the nail biters are much more rewarding. You’ll always have a better memory of when Tebow led a game winning drive instead of when he threw for 340 yards and 4 TDs in a 30 point blowout. Obviously the closer nail biters are MUCH higher variance, and the possibility of losing increases by a lot…but in my opinion, the victory is that much sweeter.
I was thinking about this a lot also with regards to Nebraska’s game against Texas. NU came within (literally) one second of beating UT, as colt retard mccoy threw the ball out of bounds with 1 second to go. It was such a bizarre turn of events, and UT kicked a 46 yard field goal to win.
I’m sure that my NU friends were in a state of shock…those last minute losses always seem to hurt much more than the slow death ones, simply because the outcome is unknown. I knew that Alabama was going to beat Florida long before the last minute ticked down. I knew the outcome, I had more time to accept it (doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt still)…but that last minute FG, yuck.
And a lot of people probably don’t care as much about sports, which is obviously fine…sometimes I wish I wasn’t a huge sports fan (specifically, Gator fan) because the pain is so much when we lose. Sometimes the feeling gets dulled over time (through many losses)…but it’s still present in some way or form.
Anyways, here’s to crushing one of those Iowa/TCU/BSU teams in the sugar bowl. Go gators
(also will post pics maybe later)
